Hyaluronic Acid
I am sure that most of you have heard of Hyaluronic Acid at this stage as it has become real buzz word and is seen in most skincare ranges in recent times but whats all the fuss and what is it actually? The best fact about this ingredient is that we make it ourselves
Each of our bodies up to a certain age produce hyaluronic acid naturally but unfortunatley with ageing our levels really slow down and even stop
Hyaluronic acid is responsible for keeping our skin lovely and hydrated but it also has another very important job in tissue repair or wound healing. It has the capability of holding 1000 times its own weight in water making it a very binding ingredient drawing in and holding moisture within the skin therefor leaving the skin more hydrated and plumped
So what does it do for skin?
I always lie to use the analogy of a grape and a raisin to my clients
A skin cell that has an abundance of ha is like a grape all nice and hydrated and plump where as a raisin was a grape but had all the hydration pulled out leaving it dry and shrivelled which can be a skin cell that has no hyaluronic acid !
Hyaluronic acid that we apply to the skin has the pulling of moisture capabilities to the skin keeping hydration levels topped up
My favourite Hyaluronic Acid is ASAP Serum Super B Complex and I really recommend adding this to your skin routine . I love to use it morning and evening after I have cleansed just using one pump before my other products .
Super B Complex is unique because it contains cross linked HA which means it stays on the skin longer and is able to penetrate further because of the lower molecular weight with longer lasting effects. It also contains Niacinamide which works on fading pigmentation .It is also very calming and reduces visible redness on the skin ,refines pores and brightens the skins complexion so its a real team player !
When would one avoid Hyaluronic Acid?
It is not a product I would advise to use alone
Since HA can hold a lot of water just think about it: It needs moisture present in order to work. If the skin is already very dry and HA is applied in a formula that doesn’t add moisture it will pull moisture from wherever it can, like from deep within your skin, where it can then evaporate into the air if not sealed properly.
On the other hand, when HA is formulated within a deeply hydrating moisturizer, that emollient will penetrate and lock moisture into the skin, which is, of course, the goal.
Also not that we need to worry about it here but if you lived in a very hot climate and used HA with no moisture in the air it would actually have the reverse effect and dry out your skin as there is no moisture in the air and its a humectant it will pull moisture from the skin
